How to Size Your DC Water Heating Element

DC Water Heating Temperatures

How many watts will it take to heat a given amount of water?

Use the handy chart below that salesman David McDaris created to figure how many watts per hour you need to heat water using a DC water heating element. Whether it’s a a stock tank, water for chickens or other animals, fountain or a converted water heater for your home, this chart will help in sizing your water heating element.

If it’s overheating you’re worried about, make sure you add a thermostat to your setup. To keep water from freezing, add our freeze-stat.

How do you wire the solar panel directly to the element?

Refer to the diagram below, including where to add an optional thermostat or freeze-stat.

You can use a solar panel to make hot water or to keep water from freezing.  Wire the solar panel directly to the DC water heating element or through a thermostat to regulate the water temperature.  You can use an optional freeze thermostat to only turn your element on to keep your water from freezing.  Just wire it into the line of the element, that’s it.
