A charge controller is necessary in any alternative energy power systems that use a battery bank. The charge controller’s purpose is to prevent battery overcharge, which lengthens the lifespan of the batteries.
Charge Controller Types
While a diversion dump load is required for wind turbine systems. The divert/dump load (such as a resistor or DC water heating element) keeps the wind turbine from freewheeling in high winds. Make sure to choose a diversion controller.
When designing a system using solar panels, use a disconnect charge controller. In this case, the charge controller simply disconnects the incoming power.
Hybrid charge controllers are also available when wind turbines and solar panels are being used together for battery charging.
